Handover Ceremony of Mammography Machine to Caritas Primary Health Care Center — Support for Breast Cancer Screening in Lebanon through Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects —

On 7 July 2026, Ambassador Kenji YOKOTA attended the handover ceremony of a mammography machine provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP). The ceremony was held at the Caritas Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) in Sin El Fil, in the presence of Father Samir Ghaoui, President of Caritas Lebanon.

The PHCC provides affordable medical services to approximately 60,000 local residents, including some 6,000 Syrian refugees. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Lebanon, with new cases increasing by 10% over the past five years. Following the malfunction of its existing mammography equipment, many women had been forced to forgo screening services due to the high cost of external facilities. Japan's support has enabled the PHCC to resume on-site breast cancer screening, and is expected to significantly improve access to early detection for residents with limited financial means.

Ambassador YOKOTA reaffirmed Japan's unwavering commitment to strengthening Lebanon's health sector and supporting vulnerable populations. Father Ghaoui expressed his deep gratitude for Japan's support.
