On February 10, 2026, Ambassador Kenji Yokota of Japan and Mr. Paolo Fontani, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut and Representative to Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic, signed a new agreement at the Japanese Embassy in Lebanon under the on-going Japan-UNESCO partnership for the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Programme, launching the second phase of the initiative, to support children and teachers affected by crisis.

Building on their shared commitment, the project “Strengthening Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being of Children in Crisis-Affected Lebanon” aims to foster continuous participation in education and promote inclusive and supporting learning experiences. The second phase expands the integration of Greening Education activities, reflecting Japan’s participation in the global Greening Education Partnership and drawing on our longstanding international leadership in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Through hands-on Greening Education activities, students will experience better psychosocial health, develop positive coping skills, reinforce emotional resilience, and learn about importance of civic engagement for green environment.

The project supports the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) in addressing the psychosocial impacts of prolonged crises on learners while advancing sustainable approaches aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
