2021/8/6
A virtual international conference in support of the Lebanese people was co-hosted by France and the United Nations on August 4. State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan WASHIO Eiichiro participated in the conference through a video message.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs WASHIO noted that a year has passed since the disastrous explosion at the port of Beirut and, despite the international community’s repeated calls upon Lebanese political leaders to take necessary action, it is much regrettable that the result of the investigation of the explosion has not been published yet and the formation of a new government and the implementation of reforms have not been completed. State Minister WASHIO underlined the urgent need for assistance in response to the severe situation in Lebanon, which faces enormous social and economic challenges. Japan decided to contribute an additional aid of about 19 million dollars through international institutions and NGOs after the previous conference in December 2020. State Minister WASHIO emphasized that Lebanese political leaders and the Lebanese government should steadily work on the implementation of necessary reforms and act for advancing talks with the IMF, this is the sole way for Lebanon to overcome its difficult situation.
