Japanese Film Festival

 

The Embassy of Japan in Lebanon in collaboration with the YWCA Beirut will present the Japanese Film Festival from Wednesday, October 24, to Saturday, October 27, 2007, at Cultural Center of YWCA Beirut, Rustum Pasha Street, Ain-Muraisseh.

 

Six films will be screened to introduce many Japanese cultural aspects and how Japanese daily life has been from the past up to the present. All the films have had a great success both in Japan and abroad and some of them have been awarded or nominated at many international film festivals.

 

The YWCA Beirut Cultural Center was refurbished by Japanese Cultural Grassroots Grant Program in 2006 and inaugurated this February. The Cultural Center was equipped with high quality sound systems and huge screen.

Born with a hearing impairment, Shigeru is a part timer working for the sanitation service. His girlfriend Takako has the same condition as well. On his usual pickup route, Shigeru finds a broken surfboard in a pile of garbage. His introduction to the world of surfing.

When the Rain Rifts

With the river in flood after heavy rains, a group of travelers is stranded at a small country inn. Among them are Ihei Misawa, a poor ronin, or masterless samurai, and his wife tayao. As the rain continues tensions rise among the guests at the inn, and Ihei takes it upon himself to cheer everyone up by arranging for a splendid feast. He has no money, however, and to pay for it goes to betting against the fencing masters. This "prize-fighting" is something at which he excels, although he tends to be somewhat clumsy in his human relations, but it is also something far beneath the dignity of a man of the samurai class

A Boy's Summer in 1945

In 1945, just before the end of the Second World War, ninth-grader Yasuo evacuates Tokyo, separeated from his parents, and lives with his grandfather and grandmother. He feels guilty about not being able to save his friend from a bomb attack. Originally a director of documentaries, Kazuo Kuroki delicately portrays each character set against beautiful scenery of Kirishima City.

Etsuko realizes that her high school has no girls' rowing team and she begins a drive to start one. Despite Etsuko's drive, the girls realize they cannot even carry the heavy boat down to the water. Nevertheless, Etsuko's dedication to the sport impresses Masako, the champion rower. Masako accepts to coach the team.

As the graduation ceremony draws near at the small junior high school, the teacher tells his students to write essays to commemorate their commencement. He himself recalls former students and remembers what happened to each of them.

Director : Akira KUROSAWA

 

During the World War II, Professor Hyakken Uchida decides to leave his university teaching career to concentrate on writing. Throughout his long life, his students have remained good friends and helped him through many difficulties.
